Let me start by saying in no way am I shaming large weddings. I had 200 guests at my own and having everyone under one roof to celebrate was one of the most special things I’ve experienced in all of my 36 years of life. That being said, I am also a self-employed homeowner with a bottomless pit of student loan debt - thank you, Syracuse University - and I sometimes shudder at the thought of the money we spent in one magical, drunken night. We danced to Talking Heads and there was crowdsurfing, though. Can you really put a price on that?
Anyway, this is just to lay out a second option for those of you who aren’t feeling the big wedding thing.
To be perfectly honest, I am pivoting my business to make room for more elopements, intimate gatherings, micro-weddings - whatever insta-term you so choose. They are MAGICAL. They can be literally ANYTHING you want them to be. Sunrise. In the woods. In a canoe. Surrounded by charcuterie. Candlelit. YOU. NAME. IT.
Q. What is an elopement or intimate wedding?
A. Basically it’s just a tiny wedding.
Q. How tiny is tiny?
A. 30ish people or less. Seriously it could just be you, your significant other, MOI and an officiant.
Q. How does it work?
A. It works in whatever way you want it to. You get to make all of the rules because by choosing to elope, you’re already tossing tradition out the window. Invite people if you want to. Or don’t. Have it in the morning. Have it in the evening. Have it at supper time (with bagel bites). Bring your dog. Stand in a lake. Hike a mountain. Wear a black dress. Say fuck in your vows.
Q. Where about locations? Where can we elope?
A. Intimate weddings & adventure elopements are on the RISE and visitation to the Adirondacks is at an all time high. Finding private locations to share your vows is A STRUGGLE to say the least. It is arguably one of the greatest challenges of my job. I live in Lake Placid and travel the park via bike, paddleboard, foot, etc. so whether you’re looking for a quaint little venue, a cozy Airbnb close to trails, a secluded beach or a summit with southern exposure - I’ve got you. It takes problem solving and an intimate understanding of the area, the weather patterns, black fly/mosquito seasons, event schedules, local & state laws, parking. etc. My local knowledge and connections are some of the most valuable things I bring to the table.
Q. How adventurous can we get?
A. I have a Build-Your-Own-Adventure package that includes an Officiant and a New York State Licensed Guide. There is no limit. I’m serious.
Q. Who do I invite?
A. Invite a sibling or a bestie. Your mom. Your accountant. Your little league coach. Did I mention there are no rules? (With the exception of group size while hiking the High Peaks, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves.)
Q. What if we still want SOME of the typical wedding things?
A. Have them! Get flowers. Do your hair and makeup. Get a caterer for AFTER you come down the mountain. That’s the whole point. You can add and subtract whatever you want to make it YOURS.
Q. Where can I learn more?
A. Fill out the contact form on the website and describe your dream elopement or intimate wedding. Be specific and know that I judge you based on your favorite road trip snacks.
